Why Incorporating Humor in a Writing Class is a Good Idea

Writing classes are not exactly the most entertaining in school, but they are still required. If you ask the average student about their thoughts regarding having to sit through a writing class they will give you one simple answer: it is boring. Even though writing lessons are all part of the school curriculum, many students simply cannot deny the fact that having to go through an entire hour of boring lectures can really affect their performance on the subject. So what could a teacher possibly do to invigorate their desire to learn how to write? Well one effective method is by adding some humor into the mix.

Humor is a perfect way of connecting with your students. Adding a little laughter into your discussions gives them a much needed break from all of the stress that comes with being a student. If you ask any tutor from any writing center they will tell you that you will never be able to help your students learn anything if you keep on maintaining a serious atmosphere in your classroom.  Kids come to school in order to learn, that is true, but you also want to let them enjoy their time in school as well. Imagine how taxing it must be for a youngster to sit through a writing class without learning anything because he or she got bored. This is clearly not what we want for our kids.

If you are a teacher who has a reputation of being a sour puss then you can surprise your students by doing away with your serious demeanor and start acting like a clown instead. This does not mean having to wear some make-up and a ridiculous suit, but rather try to be more of a joker instead. Whenever you give a writing lesson you can fool around with your lecture to help them become more attentive during class.

Not only will this make you more popular amongst the kids in school, but it might even help your students improve as well. Humor is probably the greatest form of Writing Help any teacher and student can have. So try incorporating this element more into your classes and see the changes it brings.
